The NDIS offers different types of home and living supports, but the terms can be confusing. Let’s break down Supported Independent Living (SIL), Individualised Living Options (ILO), and Short-Term Accommodation (STA or respite) so you can understand which option might suit you best.
Supported Independent Living (SIL)
SIL is for people who need 24/7 support with daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, or personal care. It’s usually provided in a shared living arrangement with other participants. SIL focuses on helping you build independence while having constant support available.
Individualised Living Options (ILO)
ILO is more flexible than SIL. It’s about designing a living arrangement that works for you—whether that’s living alone, with friends, or with a host family. ILO provides tailored supports based on your choices and independence goals, but it does not include 24/7 paid care like SIL.
Short-Term Accommodation (STA/Respite)
STA, often called respite, provides temporary accommodation and support when you or your carers need a break. It can last up to 14 days at a time and includes personal care, meals, and activities. It’s also a great way to try new experiences in a safe, supportive environment.
Which One Is Right for You?
-
Choose SIL if you need round-the-clock support.
-
Choose ILO if you want flexible, tailored living options.
-
Choose STA if you need short-term support or a change of routine.
At Pacific Community Care (PCC), we can help you explore these options and decide which suits your goals and lifestyle.
